Geocache Description:

Najznačajnija djela Miroslava Krleže su: “Tri simfonije”, “Balade Petrice Kerempuha”, “Golgota”, “Vučjak”, “Gospoda Glembajevi”, “U agoniji”, “Leda”, “Aretej”, “Hrvatski bog Mars”, “Povratak Filipa Latinovića”, “Banket u Blitvi”, “Na rubu pameti”, “Zastave”.

EN: Miroslav Krleža (1893-1981) is considered by many to be the most important Croatian writer of the 20th century. He launched many cultural initiatives with the aim of critically raising awareness of Croatian society. After his youthful ideas and enthusiasm, with the acquired life experience, wisdom and knowledge, he achieved a very fruitful literary work in Zagreb. In the period between the two world wars, he lived as an independent writer. He then developed a lively literary activity, started numerous magazines, published an extensive opus of literary works, and led polemics with his ideological and literary opponents. During the period of his literary work, from 1914 to 1981, he wrote an entire library of poems, novels, short stories, plays, essays, travelogues and polemics. Through his works he presented himself as a great writer and artist. With the power of the artistic word, he knew how to paint the social reality in his time and make a credible portrayal of the Croatian man. Krleža was a supporter of Marxist ideology and socialism, but in his literary work he rose above ideological dogmatism, for the reason that he opted for true humanism. He was a great fighter for equality and freedom of all people. The most significant works of Miroslav Krleža are: "Three Symphonies", "Ballads of Petrica Kerempuh", "Golgotha", "Wolf", "Glembays", "The Return of Filip Latinović ","Banquet in Blitva", "On the Edge of Wit", "Flags".

This monument to Krleža was made by Marija Ujević-Galetović, and it was erected in 2004 on Dubravkin Put street on the meadow where Krleža often spent his time, as the house in which he lived is located just across the street. It is vila Rein on Gvozd, where Krleža spent the last 30 years of his life with his wife Bela.
The villa houses The Memorial space of Miroslav and Bela Krleža, currently (5/2021) closed due to a combination of earthquake damage and Covid measures. Check the exact opening hours at this link of the Museum of the City of Zagreb.
Feel free to enter through the main gate of the memorial center (across from the monument), climb up to the villa and explore the surroundings all the way up to Gvozd. This is what I did recently for the first time.
