In de jaren negentig is het java eiland ontstaan volgens een masterplan van de Amsterdamse architect Sjoerd Soeters. Naast de Java en Sumatra kade en meerdere autovrije binnenhofjes omvat het Java eiland vier kleine grachten, de jongste grachten van Amsterdam, met post-modernistische grachtenpanden van verschillende jonge architecten. Vanaf de Sumatra kade ruik je de zee en kijk je naar Amsterdam Noord, in de afgelopen jaren uitgroeiend tot een hippe stadswijk en zeker een bezoekje waard, er gaat een pontje iets verderop. Welcome to the beautiful Java Island, an oasis of calm near the center of Amsterdam in the IJ River. In the 1990s, the Java Island was created according to a master plan by Amsterdam architect Sjoerd Soeters. Besides the Java and Sumatra quays and several car-free courtyards, the Java island includes four small canals, the youngest canals in Amsterdam, with post-modernist canal houses by various young architects. From the Sumatra quay you can smell the sea and look at Amsterdam North, which in recent years has become a hip city district and definitely worth a visit, there is a ferry which leaves a little further up the road.
