Sarnano è uno dei borghi meglio conservati delle Marche. A guardarlo dall’alto, con la sua struttura ellittica, la calda tonalità del cotto e i tetti rossi, è una meraviglia.
Le strade strette e ripide convergono verso la piazza Alta, silenziosa e magnifica, dove si respira quella bella atmosfera di Italia centrale e d’idillio marchigiano.
Protetto ancora a tratti dalle mura originarie, il borgo si presenta come un armonioso nucleo risalente all’epoca del libero comune, la seconda metà del XIII secolo, alla quale appartengono i principali monumenti che si affacciano sulla piazza:
- il palazzo del Popolo, trasformato nel 1831 nello splendido teatro della Vittoria, recentemente restaurato e riportato all’antico splendore;
- la chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta, edificata tra il 1265 e il 1286, e sovrastata da un solido campanile, più vecchio di un secolo. La facciata è abbellita da un portale in pietra bianca finemente scolpito, nella cui lunetta a ogiva è raffigurato il Transito della Madonna;
- il palazzo dei Priori e quello del Podestà, piccoli edifici che restituiscono l’avvolgente calore della piazza dove, come in tutto il borgo, domina il cotto.
La cache si trova nei pressi dell'uovo di Sarnano, un monolite in calcare bianco pesante 3 tonnellate che fu ritrovato nel 1986 nel torrente Terro dopo forti piogge. Potrebbe essere un manufatto di origine celtica impiegato per scegliere le coltivazioni più feconde (la vaschetta veniva riempita di semi e il primo che germogliava indicava la coltura che avrebbe dato maggiori frutti nel corso dell’anno), oppure utilizzato come osservatorio astronomico ( la vaschetta veniva riempita d’acqua in modo da riflettere la posizione delle stelle e dei pianeti).

Looking at it from above, it is a marvel to admire its elliptical structure, the warm shade of terracotta and its red roofs. The narrow and steep roads converge towards the silent and magnificent Piazza Alta, where you can breathe the beautiful atmosphere of central Italy and the Marche idyll. The village is still protected by stretches of the original walls and presents itself as a harmonious centre dating back to the time of the free communes, the second half of the XIII century, to which the main monuments surrounding the square belong:
- the “Palazzo del Popolo” (People’s Palace), transformed in 1831 in the beautiful “Teatro della Vittoria” (Vittoria Theatre), which has recently been refurbished and restored to its former glory.
- the “Chiesa di Santa Maria Assunta” (Santa Maria Assunta Church), built between 1265 and 1286 and surmounted with a century older solid bell tower. The façade is enriched with a richly carved white stone portal, in whose ogive-shaped lunette is portrayed the “Transito della Madonna” (the Transit of the Virgin Mary).
- the “Palazzo dei Priori” (the Priori Palace) and that of the “Podestà” (the Mayor), small buildings which return the embracing warmth of the square dominated by terracotta, as in the whole village.
The cache is located near the "egg of Sarnano", a monolith in white limestone weighing 3 tons which was found in 1986 in the Terro river after heavy rains. It could be an artifact of Celtic origin used to choose the most fertile crops (the tray was filled with seeds and the first one that sprouted indicated the crop that would bear the most fruit during the year), or used as an astronomical observatory (the tray was filled with water to reflect the position of the stars and the planets).
