The Government of Canada proposed the concept of World Oceans Day at the 1992 Earth Summit in Rio de Janeiro and the day has been celebrated internationally ever since. June 8th has been officially declared by the United Nations as "World Oceans Day". This international day supports a worldwide conservation focus and fosters public interest in the protection of the ocean and the sustainable management of its resources.
Canada is an ocean rich country and we have the world's longest coastline linking three different oceans – Atlantic, Arctic, and Pacific. Whether you live inland or on the coast, as Canadians, we are all connected to our oceans. World Oceans Day is a time to celebrate the important role oceans play in sustaining life and their significance to our culture, economy and environment, especially here in Newfoundland and Labrador.
In 2010, Canada took the celebration of World Oceans Day a step further and declared June 1-8 to be Oceans Week! Join with people everywhere to celebrate and take action for our shared oceans, which connects us all. By working together, we can protect and restore our shared ocean.
