Nella seconda settimana di agosto si tiene a Sarnano il tradizionale Palio del Serafino: nato come espressione del naturale antagonismo tra le contrade, in passato era una competizione che si svolgeva tutti gli anni nella ricorrenza della festa dell’Assunta.
Oggi è una delle manifestazioni più belle delle Marche, sia per la rievocazione storica con circa 500 figuranti tra dame e cavalieri, sia per la sfida in sé, che ha per protagoniste le quattro contrade di Brunforte, Poggio, Abbadia e Castelvecchio.
Al termine dei giochi la contrada vincitrice riceve lo stendardo raffigurante il Serafino, che sarà poi appeso sotto lo stemma della contrada nella chiesa di Santa Maria di piazza fino all’edizione successiva.
Sarnano hosts the traditional Palio del Serafino (Palio of the Seraphim) in the second week of August: it started off as the natural expression of the antagonism between the districts; in the past it was a competition which was held every year on the occasion of the Feast of the Assumption. Nowadays it is one of the most beautiful event in the Marche region, both for the historical re-enactment with some 500 characters including ladies and knights, and for the challenge itself, where the protagonists are the four quarters of Brunforte, Poggio, Abbadia and Castelvecchio. At the end of the games, the winning district receives the banner portraying the Seraphim, which will then by hung under the banner of the district in the “Chiesa di Santa Maria” (St. Mary Church) in the square, until the next edition.
