Servigliano nacque intorno all’anno 1.000, fondato dai Radonidi discendenti del Conte Mainardo. Il Paese Vecchio sorgeva in collina con il nome di Castel San Marco e rappresentò uno dei castelli maggiori del territorio fermano. A causa di dissesti idrogeologici il Paese Vecchio fu abbandonato nel 18°secolo. Il nuovo borgo fu fondato dal Papa Clemente XIV intorno al 1770 con il nome di Castel Clementino e fu terminato dal papa Pio VI. Il luogo scelto per l’edificazione del nuovo borgo fu quello prospicente il convento dei frati minori osservanti, dove si svolgeva la secolare “Fiera de lu pià”.
Dal 1863 il paese porta il nome attuale di Servigliano. Il borgo ha una struttura quadrangolare chiusa, 144 per 137 metri, è neoclassico con tre porte monumentali di accesso. L’impostazione architettonica si rifà al simbolo cristiano della croce, ben visibile nell’incrocio ortogonale delle due vie principali confluenti verso la chiesa collegiata. In Europa ne è un esempio praticamente unico.
Servigliano dates to around the year 1,000, founded by the Radonidi, descendants of Count Mainardo. The Old Village stood on a hill and was known as Castel San Marco; it represented one of the main castles in the Fermo area. The Old Village was abandoned in the 18th century due to the hydrogeological instability. The new village was founded by Pope Clemente XIV around 1770 with the name of Castel Clementino and was completed by Pope Pio XI. The place chosen for the construction of the new village was the one opposite the convent of the Observant Friars Minor, where the centuries-old “Fiera de lu pià” (de lu pià Fair) was held. The village bears the current name of Servigliano since 1863. The village is characterised by a closed quadrangular structure, measuring 144 by 137 metres and is in neoclassical style with three monumental gateways. The architectural setting is based on the Christian symbol of the cross, clearly visible in the orthogonal intersection of the two main roads converging towards the collegiate church. It is a virtually unique example in Europe.
