Un gioiello di San Ginesio è sicuramente la chiesa Collegiata che sorge nella piazza principale.
La facciata è suddivisa in due parti, di cui l’inferiore è più antica e comprende il magnifico portale in travertino dell’11° secolo, con archi concentrici a tutto sesto che continuano lo stesso ritmo architettonico delle colonnine e dei pilastrini. Incastonata in una formella nell’angolo destro del portale, c’è la rozza figura di San Ginesio, forse longobarda. Fra i capitelli delle colonnine del portale fanno capolino a destra, il volto di Ginesio e a sinistra la mano dell’Eterno che sorregge la Sphaera Mundi, il globo della terra.
La parte superiore della facciata è un autentico ricamo in cotto: suddivisa in cinque prospetti di uguale larghezza ma di differente altezza, fu costruita da un maestro tedesco nel 1421, durante le ultime fioriture del gotico che s’innesta sulla tradizione romanica. Accanto alla facciata è la torre civica romanica con cuspide a bulbo ricostruita nel XVII secolo. Nel silenzio delle navate la maestosa chiesa ha accolto testimonianze di ogni epoca e stile. Il crocefisso ligneo è quello portato dai trecento esuli nel 1450 durante il loro ritorno a San Ginesio. Dalla scuola del Perugino viene la Madonna con Bambino e Santo Patrono, mentre le cappelle che si aprono sulla navata destra custodiscono opere di Federico Zuccari, del Pomarancio, di Simone de Magistris e altri valenti pittori. Nella cripta, si ammirano gli affreschi di Lorenzo Salimbeni del 1406.
The “Chiesa Collegiata” (Collegiate Church), situated in the main square surely represents a true jewel of San Ginesio.
The façade is divided into two sections; the inferior one is the most antique and comprises the magnificent 11th-century travertine portal, characterised by concentric round arches which continue the same architectural rhythm of the small columns and pillars. The rough image of St. Genesius, possibly Langobard, is embedded in a tile set in the right corner of the portal. The face of St. Genesius is depicted on the right side among the capitals of the small columns of the portal, while on the left side, is the hand of the Lord, holding the Sphaera Mundi, the Earth globe. The upper part of the façade is a true terracotta embroidery: it is divided into five sections with the same length, but different height, created by a German master in 1421, during the last flowerings of Gothic, which is inserted onto the Romanesque tradition. The Romanesque civic tower, featuring an onion dome reconstructed in the XVII century stands adjacent to the façade. The majestic church has greeted accounts of every age and style in the silence of its aisles. The wooden crucifix is the one brought by the three hundred exiles in 1450 during their return to San Ginesio. The “Madonna con Bambino” (Virgin with the Baby) and St. Patron come from the school of Perugino, while the chapels which open onto the right nave preserve the artworks by Francesco Zuccari, Pomarancio, Simone de Magistris and other talented painters. The crypt is adorned with frescoes by Lorenzo Salimbeni, dating to 1406.
