Torre di Palme è una delle dieci contrade della città di Fermo, quella logisticamente più lontana, ma anche la più antica. La contrada rappresenta la gente di mare e infatti nella rievocazione storica della Cavalcata dell’Assunta che si svolge il 15 agosto di ogni anno a Fermo viene portata una barca.
Borgo prediletto dai molti villeggianti che ne sanno apprezzare il fascino, Torre di Palme propone scorci meravigliosi con le sue strette vie tra le facciate in cotto delle case fiorite di gerani e le ampie vedute del mare e delle colline circostanti. Visitando le sue belle chiese medievali ci si immerge in un’atmosfera di altri tempi. La Chiesa gotica di S. Agostino conserva un pregevole polittico di Vittore Crivelli: una profusione di colori smaltati, vivificati dall’oro dei fondi, definisce le icastiche immagini dei Santi schierati su due ordini ai lati del trono sul quale siedono la Vergine col Bambino.
Proseguendo lungo il corso si giunge alla chiesa di Santa Maria a Mare, le cui strutture murarie recano i segni di varie modifiche subite nel corso dei secoli che non hanno del tutto cancellato l’impianto gotico del tempio. Splendenti bacini in maiolica risalenti al XIV secolo ne decorano la facciata e il campanile, mentre all’interno, sulla parete sinistra del presbiterio, ancora si ravvisa una gentile raffigurazione della Madonna di Loreto, affrescata da un ignoto pittore locale operante nell’orbita di Paolo da Visso.
Usciti dalla chiesa, un ampio belvedere consente all’occhio di spaziare lungo le rive sabbiose dominando l’abitato di Porto San Giorgio, il moderno porto turistico e l’antico santuario di Santa Maria a Mare, sin dal medioevo importante centro devozionale di grande richiamo.
Torre di Palme is one of the ten districts of the city of Fermo, the farthest away from a logistic point of view, but also the oldest. The district represents the seafarers, and a boat is indeed brought to Fermo during the historic re-enactment of the “Cavalcata dell’Assunta” (Ride of the Assumption), held every year on the 15th of August. The village is favoured by many holidaymakers who know how to appreciate its charm; it offers awesome glimpses with its narrow streets among the terracotta façades adorned with blooming geraniums and the wide views of the sea and of the surrounding hills. When visiting its beautiful Medieval churches, you immerse yourself in an atmosphere of other times.
The Gothic “Chiesa di Sant’Agostino” (Church of St. Augustine) preserves a valuable altarpiece by Vittore Crivelli: a profusion of enamelled colours, enlivened by the gold-ground, defines the pictorial images of the Saints aligned on two orders on either side of the throne on which the Virgin Mary and the Baby sit.
Continuing along the avenue you reach the “Chiesa di Santa Maria a Mare” (Church of St. Mary by the Sea), whose masonry structures bear the signs of several modifications carried out during the centuries, but which have not cancelled the Gothic layout of the temple. The façade and the bell tower are decorated with splendid majolica basins of the XIV century, whereas inside, on the left wall of the presbytery a gentle representation of the “Madonna di Loreto” (Loreto Virgin Mary), frescoed by an unknown painter working in Paolo da Visso’s orbit, can still be seen. Stepping out of the church, a wide panorama allows the eye to wander along the sandy shores dominating the village of Porto San Giorgio, the modern tourist port, and the antique “Santuario di Santa Maria a Mare” (Sanctuary of Saint Mary by the Sea), an important devotional centre of great appeal since the Middle Ages.
