Secondo la tradizione il nome di Montefiore deriva da “Mons Flori”, per via del culto della Dea Flora, divinità campestre venerata dalle antiche popolazioni italiche prima della conquista romana.
Il paesaggio circostante ha sempre attirato pittori, come il veneziano Carlo Crivelli che nelle amate Marche ha trovato il suo ambiente ideale.
La Valdaso infatti ha conservato quasi immutato il “bel paesaggio” qual era raffigurato negli sfondi dei dipinti rinascimentali: una fitta rete poderale con le case coloniche sparse, e le diverse sfumature di verde degli appezzamenti a bosco, frutteti, vigneti, orti, seminativi. In autunno i colli prendono le gradazioni del giallo, dell’ocra e del marrone, i monti hanno trasparenze azzurre, il mare all’orizzonte è verde e l’aria si fa di cristallo in inverno intorno ai Sibillini innevati. Forse erano questi i colori che aveva negli occhi Carlo Crivelli, quando intorno al 1468 approdò nelle Marche dopo una giovinezza errabonda e piena di guai, per restarvi fino alla morte.
A Montefiore dell’Aso lascia un Polittico di sconvolgente bellezza: basta osservare la figura della Maddalena conservata nel polo museale San Francesco per capire tutto il senso e le sfumature di un’epoca. Quello sguardo impreziosito di una punta di malizia che si appoggia sul fasto decorativo del vestito, sopra i seni compressi dentro i ricami gotici, non si scorda più.

Valdaso has indeed preserved almost unchanged the "beautiful landscape" as it was depicted in the backgrounds of Renaissance paintings: a dense network of farms with scattered farmhouses, and the different shades of green of woodland plots, orchards, vineyards, vegetable gardens, arable land. In autumn, the hills take shades of yellow, ochre and brown, the mountains have blue transparencies, the sea on the horizon is green and the air becomes crystal in winter around the snow-covered Sibillini Mounts. Perhaps these were the colours that Carlo Crivelli had in his eyes when he arrived in Marche around 1468, after a wandering and troubled youth, to remain there until his death. In Montefiore dell'Aso he leaves a polyptych of overwhelming beauty: just look at the figure of the Magdalene kept in the museum complex of St. Francis to understand the full meaning and all nuances of an era. The look embellished with a hint of malice which rests on the decorative splendour of the dress above the breasts compressed within the Gothic embroideries, can no longer be forgotten.
