It has been brought to my attention that due to limitations of this geocaching event listing tool, there may be some ambiguity in the time of the event. I want to be very clear, this is a camp out, and it will run from Friday until Sunday with a potluck at 2 p.m. on Saturday. People are welcome to come for just the potluck but my hope is that people will come and camp and spend enough time to get to know people more than just a couple of hours for dinner.
Once upon a time, geocachers from around Utah (and often much farther away) used to rendezvous at this special site to pay homage to the first geocache in Utah which was placed very near this spot in 2000 by Leaper64. A year later, I had caught the Geocaching bug and was really anxious to share the addiction with others, so, i reserved a campsite nearby and posted the coordinates on this website and invited any who wished to do so to come join me for a weekend. We had a fantastic time playing games, camping, eating, doing what I believe to be the first geocaching poker run, and of course GEOCACHING. We did this for several years more, and then it kind of lost steam, as often happens.
I'm not sure if anyone will even show up for this, but I miss this place, and am very excited to spend some time there again. And what would make it even better is to share that with some of my old friends, and any new friends who might want to join.
The coordinates posted are as close as I could get to the actual fire ring of the campsite I've reserved. That site can accommodate just 12 people, and I'll open that up for free to the first ten who show up or make a reservation with me. Please, if you reserve space, show up, so nothing goes to waste. The site only allows three vehicles so you may have to drop your gear and park your rig elsewhere (probably a good idea anyway, since the more cars we have there, the less space we have for tents). I'll make a trip there as soon as the road is open to see how things look. I have been in the site, but I haven't been to the area since 2009, and Google Earth can only show you so much.
As we always did before, there will be a potluck lunch/dinner on saturday at 2pm. You don't "have" to participate, but it would be great if everyone did. I always loved our potlucks. I will try to come up with something special to get that ball rolling.
We always had some fun games, and there always seemed to be plenty of new geocaches posted in the area after every event. There are sitll lots of geocachers there, even some I haven't found, so download the caches to your phone or GPS and come hang out. We plan to arrive on Friday the 13th of August at or around 3pm, and will stay til Sunday afternoon. Use the coordinates to find us, but if you MUST, feel free to use the hint.
