Fondata dai Piceni in epoca pre-romana o dai Sabini intorno al IV secolo a.C., Treia prende il nome da quello della dea Trea-Jana, divinità di origine greco-sicula. In epoca tardo-romana Treia abbraccia il culto di Iside (importato dall’Egitto tolemaico da alcuni magistrati locali), la dea della fertilità.
Ma Treia evoca anche il nome “terra”: terra solida e mistica insieme, da una parte “ombelico del mondo” romano e cristiano, con la via commerciale e militare Settempedana che la attraversa, ma anche itinerario dello spirito (collega Roma a Loreto) prediletto da San Francesco che ebbe tra i primi seguaci il Beato Pietro da Treia, di cui si parla anche nei Fioretti.
Questa, che si stende tra l’Adriatico ed i Sibillini, è la terra dell’argilla rossa e dei panorami che evocano suggestioni d’infinito non solo leopardiano: è nato qui Ilario Altobelli, francescano e astronomo, scopritore dei satelliti di Saturno.
Founded by the Picens in pre-Roman times or by the Sabines around the IV century BC, Treia takes its name from that of the goddess Trea-Jana, deity of Greek-Sicilian origin. In the late Roman era Treia embraces the cult of Isis (imported from Ptolemaic Egypt by some local magistrates), the goddess of fertility.
But Treia also evokes the name "land": both solid and mystical land on the one side, the Roman and Christian "navel of the world", with the commercial and military route Settempedana that crosses it, but also the itinerary of the spirit (it connects Rome to Loreto), it was favoured by St. Francis who had among his first followers the Blessed Peter of Treia, who is also mentioned in the “Fioretti” (small sacrifices). This land, which stretches between the Adriatic Sea and the Sibillini Mounts, is the land of red clay and landscapes that evoke suggestions of infinity, not only of Leopardi’s nature: Ilario Altobelli, Franciscan monk and astronomer, discoverer of Saturn’s satellites, was born here.
