Mura duecentesche, torri longobarde, palazzi rinascimentali e neoclassici, un dedalo di suggestivi vicoli e viuzze che sfocia nella magnifica piazza della Repubblica: un ferro di cavallo delimitato dall’aerea balaustra in marmo con il monumento al Papa Pio VI.
Come è caratteristica in questa parte della Marca, sono soprattutto le chiese ad essere e fare da scrigno ai tesori d’arte: San Michele, romanica con elementi gotici, Santa Chiara, barocca e con una statua della Madonna di Loreto, la cattedrale, progettata da Andrea Vici, allievo del Vanvitelli.
Dietro la cattedrale si incontra Porta Vallesacco, monumento nazionale del XIII sec.: è qui che i Montecchiesi catturarono con uno stratagemma Corrado d’Antiochia impegnato in un’epica battaglia.
Thirteenth-century walls, Langobard towers, Renaissance and Neoclassical palaces, a maze of suggestive alleys and lanes flowing into the magnificent “Piazza della Repubblica”: a horseshoe bordered by the marble balustrade with the monument to Pope Pius VI. As is characteristic in this part of the Marca, it is above all the churches that are and act as a chest for the art treasures: St. Michael, Romanesque with Gothic elements, Santa Chiara, Baroque and featuring a statue of Our Lady of Loreto, the cathedral, designed by Andrea Vici, a pupil of Vanvitelli.
Leaving behind the apse of the cathedral, you reach “Porta Vallesacco” (Vallesacco Gateway), a national monument of the XIII century. It is here that the then Montecchiesi captured with a stratagem Conrad of Antioch.
