“What’s the ‘Point”, is a series of geocaches placed along the Warrenpoint to Newry section of the dual-carriageway. This is to encourage cachers to take their time, by walking from Newry to Warrenpoint, and appreciating the wonderful views and changes of scenery which is usually missed when travelling by car along this stretch of road.
Please be careful if you have young children with you, (this is a dual carriageway, max speed 70 MPH), as the traffic, especially lorries, can create a lot of wind turbulence at high speeds. There is a footpath and a cycle lane which can also act as a hard shoulder, please be aware of the traffic around you.
So;
“What’s the ‘Point” #1 – for the people living here, that actually means Warrenpoint, which has been shortened to “The ‘Point”
“What’s the ‘Point” #2 - It is something of a puzzle that Warrenpoint, a fairly small town, boasts a full dual-carriageway to connect it to Newry when there are many much larger towns in Northern Ireland that would love to have an access road of this standard.
The answer lies in the fact that in the 1960s it was planned that Warrenpoint would be the main port for Northern Ireland. The road replaced a fairly narrow and unsafe single-carriageway road, parts of which are still in existence. However, instead the Port of Belfast and Port of Larne have emerged as the most dominant. This 1970s road looks somewhat out of place and the fact that it is connected to single-lane roads at both ends negates most of the speed advantages it offers.

“What’s the ‘Point” #3 – This had originally been intended as a ‘Mini Power Trail’, where it might encourage or help cachers to start a ‘streak’ or obtain a reasonable number of caches in a day. When I had finished taking the coordinates for all the caches, I realised there were 26 in total, there was only one thing to do – create an Alphabet set of caches – it might help with other ‘Challenges’.
Note the D/T ratings and attributes on some of these caches, as not all are accessible from the footpath. Don’t forget to pick up the numbers for the A –Z Bonus cache as you do this series. Bonus numbers A,B,C etc. are not necessarily in the A,B,C caches.
Please Note: In order to claim a find, you must sign the log – no exceptions.
