Acer is a genus of trees and shrubs commonly known as maples. There are approximately 132 species ranging from Asia, Europe, North Africa, and North America. The maple leaf, a common symbol of strength and endurance, is most notable for being on the coat of arms for Canada, and even sits front and center on the nation's flag. Twelve species of maple are known to occur within North America, and at least one species of maple inhabits each Canadian provence.
The cache is located directly in front of, what I can only assume is, a Bigleaf Maple, native to the entire Pacific coast of North America. The whole of Stephenson Canyon is littered with them, so be sure to get your fill of this large cultural icon when searching for this little film container.
