The New England Franco-Route will guide you to the places, in Maine, New Hampshire, Massachusetts and Rhode Island where thousands of French Canadians settled to work, live and create new communities at the turn of the 20th century.
Lewiston, ME is a city of about 37,000 residents and is the second largest city in Maine. In the colonial era, Abenaki bands inhabited the region. Among these were the Androscoggin tribe, which lent its name both to the region and to its main waterway. People of European descent began settling the area in the late eighteenth century.
USM’s Franco-American Collection preserves and promotes the culture and heritage of Maine’s Franco-American population. It holds a wealth of research materials and it sponsors a variety of events that celebrate and promote the history and culture of Franco-Americans. What originally stemmed from the collecting of Franco-American archives in 1972 at the former Saint Dominic Highschool, blossomed to the collection it is today. This was largely thanks to Madeleine Giguère whose mission it was to preserve the rich Franco-American history of both the city and the state. For those desiring to learn and to explore more about Lewiston-Auburn’s Franco-American heritage, USM’s Franco-American Collection is a necessary stop.

Comptant environ 37 000 habitants, Lewiston est la deuxième ville en importance dans le Maine. Lors de l’époque coloniale, cet endroit était habité par des groupes abénaquis; la tribu Androscoggin laissa son nom à la région et à son principal cours d’eau. La Collection franco-américaine de USM (University of Southern Maine) vise à préserver et à promouvoir la culture et l’héritage de la population franco-américaine du Maine. La Collection vit le jour en 1972 avec la formation d’un fonds d’archive à l’ancienne école secondaire Saint Dominic. C’est Madeleine Giguère qui en fut l’âme dirigeante : Giguère se donna pour mission de préserver l’histoire franco-américaine de la ville et de l’état.
