Lower Homebush, and nearby Homebush, were significant gold mining areas from the 1860s, both requiring schools. This brick building superseded a timber structure and opened in 1887, closing in 1967. Local action saved it from demolition or use as farm storage. For 19 years until 2011 the site was used as a rural camp by a Melbourne high school which relocated the old Mt Lonarch school to serve as a kitchen/dining room, and the Warrenmang shearers’ quarters to use as bunk rooms, both visible from where you stand. The property is now maintained by Parks Victoria.
