Esanatoglia è un piccolo gioiello nelle Marche più appartate, al confine con l’Umbria. Vista dall’alto, Esanatoglia sembra accudita dai campanili che percorrono il corso Vittorio Emanuele, l’asse viario principale, da porta Sant’Andrea alla parte alta, porta Panicale, da dove si esce verso l’intatta valle di San Pietro. Racchiuso dalle mura castellane lambite dal fiume Esino, il borgo si dispone come una sorta di fuso, innestato di vie secondarie che portano ai rioni, ognuno con la propria piazzetta.
Nella parte più antica svetta con il suo campanile la pieve di Santa Anatolia, citata dalle fonti già nel 1180. Presenta uno splendido portale in pietra trecentesco e un’epigrafe romana posta sul basamento della torre campanaria che, secondo gli storici, sarebbe la prova di un insediamento romano al tempo delle conquiste di Augusto.
Da non perdere l’ex Chiesa di San Francesco dove sono conservati gli affreschi trecenteschi del “Maestro di Esanatoglia” Diotallevi di Angeluccio, tra cui una pregevole Madonna del Latte. Scendendo in basso, le Fontane di San Martino, una volta chiamate Fonti di Fuori Porta, rappresentano un raro esempio di opera idraulica trecentesca ancora funzionante.
La chiesa di Santa Maria Maddalena custodisce un pregevole dipinto, la Crocifissione, sull’altare maggiore, due nature morte di origine fiamminga e una cantoria lignea istoriata e dipinta con scene della vita dei Santi, dove sono ancora presenti le grate che impedivano alle Clarisse di essere viste.
Esanatoglia is a small jewel in the most secluded part of the Marche region, on the border with Umbria. Seen from above, Esanatoglia seems to be taken care of by the bell towers which run along Corso Vittorio Emanuele, the main road axis, from the “Porta Sant'Andrea” (Sant’Andrea Gateway) to the upper part, “Porta Panicale” (Panicale Gateway), which leads outside towards the intact valley of San Pietro. Enclosed by the castle walls lapped by the river Esino, the village is arranged as a sort of spindle, grafted by secondary roads that lead to the districts, each with its own square.
In the oldest part stands the parish church of St. Anatolia, with its bell tower, mentioned by sources as early as 1180. It features a splendid fourteenth-century stone portal and a Roman epigraph placed on the base of the bell tower which, according to historians, is the evidence of a Roman settlement at the time of the conquests by Augustus.
Do not miss the former Church of St. Francis where the fourteenth-century frescoes by the "Master of Esanatoglia" Diotallevi di Angeluccio are preserved, including an exquisite “Madonna del Latte” (Milk Virgin). Going down, the Fountains of St. Martin, once called “Fonti di Fuori Porta” (Out-of-town Sources), represent a rare example of fourteenth-century hydraulic work still working.
The church of St. Mary Magdalene houses a fine painting, the Crucifixion, on the main altar, two still lifes of Flemish origin and a wooden choir decorated and painted with scenes from the life of the Saints, where the grates that prevented the Poor Clares from being seen are still present.
