General Ulysses S. Grant was a military leader and 18th president of the United States. When generals from all over the Union were unable to prevail, Grant was able to win battles with the Confederacy and move the country forward. Though described as a drunk at the time Lincoln said of Grant (and I'm paraphrasing here) " I'll have what he's having". After the war Grant found himself continuing a life of service. When he disagreed about the path forward after the war, he stood up for it and became president. Though he was not perfect, in his two terms he was ahead of his time in recognizing African American's in our culture along with other groups. Today we honor him around a building that shares his rank. Bring a pen, sign, and salute.
