1972 m. gegužės 14 d., protestuodamas prieš sovietinį režimą Romas Kalanta atėjo į patį Kauno miesto centrą, šalia Kauno valstybinio muzikinio teatro, ir Sušukęs „Laisvę Lietuvai!“ apsipylė benzinu ir susidegino. Jo užrašų knygelėje liko įrašas: „Dėl mano mirties kalta tik santvarka“. Šis įvykis pagyvino antisovietines nuotaikas krašte, suteikė vilties, galiausiai peraugo į Sąjūdžio judėjimą. Šalia paminklinio akmens rasite ir namą su atminimo plokšte, kuriame gyveno Kalanta.
ĮDOMU: jau 1972 m. gegužės 20 d. pasaulį pasiekė žinios apie Romo žūtį ir neramumus Kauno mieste. Vėliau tai tapo dar viena proga priminti pasauliui apie Lietuvos nepriklausomybės siekį. Įdomu, jog 1972 m. gegužės 22 d. Maskvoje prasidėjo Jungtinių Amerikos Valstijų Prezidento Ričardo Niksono vizitas. Įvykiai Kaune Jungtinių Amerikos Valstijų Prezidento vizito Sovietų Sąjungoje išvakarėse akivaizdžiai griovė mitą apie klestinčią ir visas problemas išsprendusią imperiją, supurtė jos valdžios institucijas.

1972 On May 14, protesting against the Soviet regime, Romas Kalanta came to the very center of Kaunas, near the Kaunas State Musical Theater, and shouting "Freedom for Lithuania!", poured gasoline and burned himself. There was an entry in his notebook: "Only the system is to blame for my death." This event enlivened anti-Soviet sentiment in the country, gave hope, and eventually evolved into the Sąjūdis movement.
