Geocache Description:

War Memorial, Lancaster JB125 & LM308

Lancaster JB125 came down on Friday 12 January 1945 at 9.50pm. It had been returning from a 3 hour training flight returning to RAF Syerston. What is not evident until you reach the memorial is just how high RAF Syerston is compared to the crash site. JB125 over shot the runway, banked sharply and crashed into a field killing all the crew.

Lancaster LM308 came down on Sunday 28 January 1945 at 2.16am. The plane was on it's final approach to RAF Syerston when for unknown reasons it crashed at high speed and exploded. Eye witness reports state both engines were on fire when it crashed.

Both Lancasters were from No. 5 Lancaster Finishing School.

The crash sites quickly became lost over time until they were discovered by Lady Helen Nall from Hoveringham Hall who set about researching both planes and a year later, this memorial was unveiled.
