Hook-a-duck is an old fairground stall game of chance, popular with young children. A number of identical plastic ducks are floated in a large water container, often a paddling pool or trough. The ducks have rings fastened to their heads so that they can be hooked by the player.
Although the ducks appear identical, some of them have a hidden mark not visible to the player. Ducks with these hidden marks are considered winning ducks, and those without are considered losing ducks.
The modern version is often much simpler. All ducks are winning ducks and the player chooses their prize. These prizes are purchased cheaply in bulk and cost far less than the fee the player pays to participate.
