Geocache Description:

Welcome to the Cabbage Tree Swamp 5* Trackable Hotel!

History -

The base ground of this area is basalt from the lava flow that ran from Mount Eden around 28,000 years ago. The hard, nonporous basalt ground allowed for the gathering of water turning this area into a Swamp. The area was referred to as "Cabbage Tree Swamp" due to all of the cabbage trees that surrounded the swamp.

In the 1800s, much of this area was a farm owned by the Gribble Family, the farm was slowly subdivided into several properties in this area. In the early 1900s, humans started to convert this area for recreational purposes. In summer it was used for various games such as cricket, rugby and bowling. Winter rains would bring so much water that the area would flood and become a lake.

Lately it has become Gribblehirst Park. Today it hosts several community spaces such as The Gribblehirst Hub, The Shed, Tumeke Cycle Space, The Eden Rugby Football Club and several public spaces and gardens.

(I have included some photos in the Gallery for those who like historic images.)

The Cache  -

Access code : 814

Should be an easy find, access day or night as there is a light here. Although it is recommended to park in Gribblehirst Park and take the small path to the cache, wheelchair access is possible from Begbie Place. **DO NOT PARK IN SOMEONES DRIVEWAY.**

This cache is good for everyone, there is plenty of space for trackables, swag, caching supplies and anything else you wish to place in it.

Please be gentle with the whole unit. The inside component slides left and right.

There are two parts to this cache, the geocaching logbook and a letterbox stamp and ink.

Please keep it tidy and relock the cache when you are finished.

This cache is made for repeat visitors, although you can only get one smilie, feel free to come back to drop some trackables off that need a place to rest, swap some swag or to just come and discover what's here!

**The stamps and ink are not swag, please leave in the cache!!**

Massive Thanks -

A MASSIVE thank you to the Gribblehirst Hub for allowing this cache to be placed on their building!!

Initial Release -
