The railway line that I am referring to here as the 'Parkstone Mineral Railway' will be partly familiar to some local cachers as the line that branched off at Parkstone station, see top of map above, and ran to George Jennings Pottery. However, in the latter part of the 19th century, George Jennings decided that he would rather not pay duty, levied by the harbour commissioners, for unloading coal at Poole Quay and ordered his men to build a pier that is now known as Saltern's Marina. The line joined the existing one at the pottery, see map below, ran across Pottery Road, round Parkstone cemetery and then crossed Sandbanks road to end up at what was then called Salterns Works at the base of the pier. Initially the route was horse drawn but then the company bought a saddle tank locomotive and a full scale railway was built. Incidentally, the harbour commissioners still charged duty at Salterns and after a big court case, they won. However, this unloading point was closer to the pottery and was a much better way to transport the coal, so not too much of a price to pay; it also meant that it was easy to export finished goods via. the railway and pier.
