Introduction to the series: From 1683 to 1715 most of the settlers in Dutchess County were Dutch, many of whom moved in from Albany and Ulster Counties. They settled along the Fishkill Creek and in the areas that are now Poughkeepsie and Rhinebeck. It is not surprising that so many streams and creeks in the area are called ‘kills’ from the Dutch. This series highlights the local kills.
The Casperkill is also known as Jan Casper’s Kill, and is shown on federal maps as Casper Creek. It flows almost 12 miles starting at Peach Hill in the Town of Poughkeepsie, and continuing south, crossing Routes 44 /55 near Burnett Blvd, down through Vassar College where it is joined by its only major tributary, the Fonteyn Kill. It continues southwest, emptying into the Hudson north of Bowdoin Park. (source: Wikipedia)
