Geocache Description:

Welcome to Livingston County’s Bicentennial GeoTrail!

My name is Find R. Fox. I’ll be your guide to super-sleuthing the hides at these amazing, historical locations all around our beautiful 200-year-old county!

To make your travel through history a bit easier, imagine yourself in a Time Machine (your best mode of transportation will do). Set the dial (your gps unit) to the first year (coordinates) listed below, check the waypoints for Parking and push the navigate button! Whirl your way there then switch your coordinates as needed to navigate to the geocache to sniff out the container and sign the log sheet. Good Luck & Enjoy the journey!!

This is the 1st of 3 caches regarding the Sullivan-Clinton Campaign.

The 1779 Sullivan-Clinton Expedition, or Sullivan Campaign, was a military campaign during the American Revolutionary War against British Loyalists ("Tories") and some of the Haudenosaunee (Iroquois) who sided with the British.

General George Washington chose General John Sullivan to lead an army of 5000 men to destroy the crops and villages of the Seneca Nation, known as the “Keepers of the Western Door,” in order to break their morale and to end the Tory-Indian raids across the state.

On September 12, 1779, General Sullivan’s troops entered Livingston County and marched by the foot of Hemlock Lake and over steep terrain to set up camp at what is now known as Foot’s Corners, about two miles from Conesus Center.

Next to the entrance of Hemlock Lake Park stands a memorial in honor of the 150th Anniversary of the Sullivan Campaign. The monument stands nearly fourteen feet high and is capped with an old millstone. (See the Scenic Waypoint.

A large bronze plaque showing the trail of the Sullivan Campaign through Western New York was imbedded into the center of the structure and is identical to plaques installed at Boyd and Parker Park, Foote’s Corners and at various other locations along the military trail outside of Livingston County.

The monument was constructed of local stone gathered from old gristmills. According to residents, Indian relics such as tomahawks and arrowheads found in the area were also used in the structure.

Hemlock Lake Park is operated by the town of Livonia and the lake supplies water to the City of Rochester, Livonia and other towns. The lake remains the most pristine of all the Finger Lakes.

Thanks to the Town of Livonia for allowing placement of this cache!

Let's pretend that you are a member of Sullivan's army. Once encamped, you have been chosen to collect 'firewood'. There is a tree to either side of you (2nd and 3rd trees from the West end of the SAME row) with some 'firewood'. Find the 4 pieces of 'firewood' (1 by 1 by 8 inch pieces wrapped in green cammo netting)to discover the final for this cache.

After you solve the puzzle, please make sure to return the 'firewood' back to its original location (under 2nd and 3rd pine trees from West end wrapped in green cammo netting) as good or better than you found it. DO NOT REPLACE 'FIREWOOD' UNDER OTHER TREES THAN THE 2ND AND 3RD FROM WEST END IN SAME ROW! WE HAVE MADE MULTIPLE UNNECESSARY TRIPS TO FIND, MOVE BACK, AND REPLACE THE FIREWOOD!

NOTE: This cache is ONE of the caches (tasks) that you need to find for HPNU HP4 - The Goblet of Fire, GC9XX65.

This cache is 1 of 36 caches comprising the Livingston County Bicentennial GeoTrail (LivCo200) placed in the summer of 2021 in honor of Livingston County’s Bicentennial by members of the local geocaching group called the Bee Hive.
