Geocache Description:

This cache contains a log sheet only , so byop --like all the other 4 dinosaur caches in this series , its hidden by rocks ., they will be difficult during the winter to find as the altitude and wind brings much snow --i know i use to live off East St less than 1/2 a mile from this cache.,check for ticks--they're EXTREMELY plentiful in this area.  This is a long hike from where you'll need to park--bring water---believe it or not , some trails exist back here!  Easier to find in late fall and winter is a cave not too far of a hike from this cache up high on this mountain where draft dodgers of the Viet Nam War hid out.  Today one can find broken glass beer bottles on the floor of the cave.  My old land lady(my/post college days) lived next door to me and told me all the old stories including that her home of birth was one of the 14 torn down to build route 91 next to this mountain. Down below this mountain across from the corner of East  St and route 5 -directly across from the bike trail along the railroad tracks , the Dorman Cafe and old train station were located.  She had told me that she paid 10 cents a ride to take the train to Chicopee to work at the old Fisk Tire factory.  After the Dorman Cafe was torn down her son had retrieved the cafes mascot that hung over the roof line -an 8 foot long wooden mountain lion.  The house that i rented from her was the last house on the dead end street called Underwood Avenue (yellow--can be seen driving down rte 91-south , immediately before entering Holyoke sign)  One day while raking the leaves in the backyard i came across the mountain lion wooden sign and thats when my landlady who lived next door told me the story.  Apparently , her son used the wooden mountain lion for target practice while shooting his bb rifle.  If driving up East St towards Easthampton center , you'll see the remains of the old school house where my old land lady went to school on the opposite side of the street from Mount Tom. She also had told me about the tram that brought people up the mountain to the hotel on top of this mountain near the corner of rte 5 & East St.  Also near this intersection , it may still be there ? - its a trailer home that acted as the post office until the late 1970's.  This area of Easthampton is referred to as Mount Tom Junction and technically still is called that although today is part of Easthampton.  Mt.Tom village had a school house, post office, bar, train depot and at the beginning of 1900 a major hotel on top of this mountain.  I hope that you enjoy your caching & dont forget to check for those nasty ticks!  Please note that the park entrance fee will be increasing from $5 per carload to $8 per carload from Memorial Day weekend 2021' until Columbus Day or there about (October).  Depending on availability you can park for free bye either entrance and hike in ---rte 141 across from Log Cabin or Reservation Rd next to rte 91 overpass. Please note -NONE of the DINOSAUR series are winter friendly!  Although this cache is definately the furthest from the nearest parking --there actually is trails back here! On a hot humid day , hiking back here can be tough--please bring water!  Have a Great day! QuietBear
