Piazza della Libertà a Macerata è il fulcro della vita cittadina: qui si affacciano l’Università, la Prefettura, il Teatro Lauro Rossi e svetta l’imponente torre Civica alta 64 metri, il cui interno è visitabile e regala una vista superba sul territorio circostante.
Dal 2015 questa piazza si è arricchita di un altro elemento molto interessante e di sicuro pregio: la ricostruzione dell’antico orologio planetario, che due volte al giorno, alle 12.00 e alle 18.00, invita ad ammirare il carosello dei Re Magi in onore della Vergine Maria che esce da un portoncino passando davanti ad un uccellino che con il becco suona una campanella. La particolarità di questo orologio è quello di essere non semplicemente “astronomico”, ma “planetario”, ossia di rappresentare pianeti del sistema solare conosciuto al tempo della realizzazione dell’originale.
Il quadrante Policromo, oltre ad indicare le ore, mostra i moti apparenti della Luna e del Sole e il circuito dei 5 pianeti conosciuti al tempo dai Fratelli Ranieri che realizzarono l’orologio nel 1569, prendendo spunto da uno simile realizzato a Venezia.
Le ore segnate dall’orologio sono 24, secondo l’antico calendario Italico, ed è possibile anche conoscere in che fase lunare ci si trova.
All’interno del palazzo adiacente la Torre civica si può ammirare il meccanismo, mentre all’interno della torre stessa è visitabile la riproduzione realizzata su progetto dal Maestro Alberto Gorla che oggi regola l’orologio e il planetario.

Piazza della Libertà in Macerata is the hub of city life: onto the square overlook the University, the Prefecture, the Lauro Rossi Theatre and the imposing 64-metre high Civic Tower, whose interior can be visited and offers a superb view of the surrounding area. This square has been enriched with another remarkably interesting and certainly valuable element since 2015: the reconstruction of the ancient planetary clock, which twice a day, at 12:00 and at 18:00, invites to admire the carousel of the Three Kings in honour of the Virgin Mary, coming out of a door passing in front of a little bird that rings a bell with its beak.
The peculiarity of this clock is that it is not simply "astronomical", but "planetary", that is it represents the planets of the solar system known at the time of the realization of the original one. The Polychrome dial, in addition to indicating the hours, shows the apparent motions of the Moon and the Sun and the circuit of the 5 planets known at the time by the Ranieri Brothers, who created the clock in 1569, inspired by a similar one realized in Venice. The hours marked by the clock are 24, according to the ancient Italic calendar and it is also possible to know the corresponding phase of the moon. Inside the building, adjacent to the Civic Tower, it is possible to admire the mechanism, while the reproduction designed by Master Alberto Gorla, which today regulates the clock and the planetary, can be visited inside the tower.
