La Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta si eleva sul margine orientale del parco del Girfalco, da cui si gode una vista mozzafiato che comprende il Monte Conero, le colline marchigiane, il mar Adriatico, Monterubbiano, il Monte dell’Ascensione e, all’alba delle giornate più limpide, le Alpi Bebie.
Fu edificata sul sito di un tempio pagano di cui sono visibili i resti nell’interessante Ipogeo.
L’antico Duomo venne distrutto nel 1176 da Federico I il Barbarossa per essere ricostruito nel 1227 da Giorgio da Como, per volontà di Federico II. Di tale ricostruzione rimangono visibili l’imponente facciata romanico-gotica in pietra d’Istria e l’atrio dove sono conservati affreschi del Trecento e il trecentesco monumento funebre di Giovanni Visconti d’Oleggio.
Demolita nel 1781 per volontà dell’arcivescovo Andrea Minucci, la cattedrale fu ricostruita in circa otto anni su progetto di Cosimo Morelli, l’architetto prediletto da papa Clemente XIV e Pio VI, che la ridisegnò secondo un gusto propriamente neoclassico. La cattedrale presenta uno stupefacente portale con arco a tutto sesto, sormontato da una cuspide che custodisce nella nicchia la statuina bronzea della Vergine Assunta in Cielo. Al di sopra del portale campeggia il rosone realizzato dallo scultore fermano Giacomo Palmieri nel 1348. Sul tetto troneggia dal 1423 la scultura di un gallo.
All’interno sono conservate opere pregevoli, quali un sarcofago paleocristiano del III- IV secolo, collocato nella cripta duecentesca, e un’icona bizantina donata da Giacomo della Marca. Dall’altare principale si può inoltre vedere un mosaico paleocristiano con pavoni.
The “Cattedrale di Santa Maria Assunta” (Cathedral of St. Mary of the Assumption) rises on the eastern edge of the Girfalco Park, from which you can enjoy a breath-taking view that includes Mount Conero, the hills of the Marche region, the Adriatic Sea, Monterubbiano, the Mount of the Ascension and, at dawn of the clearest days, the Bebie Alps. It was erected on the site of a pagan temple whose remains are visible in the intriguing Hypogeum. The ancient Cathedral was destroyed in 1176 by Frederick I Barbarossa, to be rebuilt in 1227 by Giorgio da Como, at the behest of Frederick II. This reconstruction features the imposing Istrian-stone Romanesque-Gothic façade and the atrium with frescoes from the Fourteenth century and the fourteenth-century funeral monument of Giovanni Visconti d’Oleggio, which are still visible. The Cathedral was rebuilt in about eight years on a project by Cosimo Morelli, the favourite architect of Pope Clement XIV and Pius VI, who redesigned it according to a properly Neoclassical taste, after it was demolished despite the aversion of the population of Fermo by the will of Archbishop Andrea Miucci. The Cathedral features an astonishing portal with a round arch, surmounted by a pinnacle that houses a bronze statuette of the Virgin Assumed into Heaven in the niche. Above the portal stands the rose window made by the Fermo-born sculptor Giacomo Palmieri in 1348. The sculpture of a rooster has dominated the roof since 1423. Inside valuable artworks are preserved, such as an early Christian Sarcophagus from the III-IV century located in the thirteenth-century crypt and a Byzantine icon donated by Giacomo della Marca. From the main altar, an early Christian mosaic with peacocks can also be seen.
