Geocache Description:

The Albany Woolstores were built in 1947 at the western end of Princess Royal Harbour.  It is thought to be one of the largest single storage spaces in rural Western Australia.  The site still stands, however, it is no longer used for wool handling purposes, and is looking quite derelict.

The following are some newspaper extracts obtained from the State Library of Western Australia.

ALBANY WOOL STORES -  In response to a communication from the Albany Municipal Council seeking information regarding the proposed wool stores at Albany, the Minister for Works and Housing (Mr. Lemmon) telegraphed from Canberra yesterday stating that plans and specifications were being prepared for the building and that it was hoped to call tenders for its erection shortly. (16/05/1947 newspaper extract)

ALBANY WOOL STORES - The large wool store at the Two Mile, Albany, is now practically completed. The building which cost £80,000 to construct, covers an area of about 2 acres.  (18/12/1948 newpaper extract)

The tender of Messr. Brown and Norman, of Albany has been accepted by the Federal Government for the erection on the Two Mile site at Albany of an additional wool store in connection with the suggested use of Albany as a wool appraisement centre. The contract price is £40,600. The work will entail the dismantling of three large sheds at Fremantle and .portion of a fourth structure will also be used. This material will be removed by rail to Albany. The new building is estimated to cover an area of about 21 acres close to a large wool shed. The bulldozer recently purchased by the Albany Municipal Council will be used in preparing the site.  (Date unknown)
