This is my first Gadget/Puzzle Cache and one that promotes both the history and gourmet of my username HistoricalGourmet, and I was granted permission from both Christian and David Asam in placing it on their property, so please be respectful of the surrounding grounds. The cache is out in the open so muggles will certainly see it as it's about 2' in size and 10" across. It's made of cedar with a pyramid of tin atop the cache and my awesomeness WVDoxies helped me get it squared away and set up. Now a little bit of information to wet your whistle before you work to gain access to "The Brothers".
History of the Bavarian Inn WV
For over 40 years, The Bavarian Inn has hosted friends and dignitaries to experience "european elegance on the potomac" in historic Shepherdstown, West Virginia overlooking the Potomac River towards Ferry Hill that played a significant part in Civil War history as the boyhood home of Henry Kyd Douglas, a member of Stonewall Jackson's staff and prominant local lawyer after the war.
In the spring of 1977, Erwin and Carol Asam purchased the Greystone Manor to preserve a way of life and the history of their family. Erwin, a native of Munich, Germany and Carol, a native of Sheffield, England previously owned the Piccadilly Restaurant in Washington DC. But their dream was to open a small German restaurant serving authentic cuisine from Erwin's homeland. Moving to Shepherdstown with their two sons Christian and David, the Greystone manor became that restaurant and their home.
Since 2000, Christian and David have been intimately involved in the operations of the inn. Growing up in and around the business they have the same love and passion for the community and hospitality started by their family generations ago. The Bavarian Inn is now the The Bavarian Inn Resort and Brewery and here two brothers have taken their passion for culinary history and brought it into the 21st. century.
Similar to the points around the compass sticker marking this Geocache, the sunburst symbol used in the center of the Bavarian Brothers Brewing logo can be found on the front door of the Asamkirche, “Asam Church” in Munich Germany. Built in the 1700’s by two brothers , Egid Quirin Asam and Cosmas Damian Asam of whom Christian and David are believed to be direct descendants. the “sunburst” doors have welcomed visitors for over 300 years. The brewery is a nod to their family heritage and sunburst symbol means that all are “welcome” to enjoy their new adventure!
What you seek is a way to get inside, but first you must KEY in on the correct numbers to open the cache. The clues you need are in relation to the Battle of Shepherdstown that was fought September 19-20, 1862 a short distance from where you stand. The Confederates held the high ground overlooking the Shepherdstown Cement Mill and its many furnaces on the Virginia (Now West Virginia) side of the river and the Union was bound and determined to knock them off the bluffs. One such Union Regiment, filled with excited, yet inexperienced young men, never having fired their weapons in battle let alone training exercises, was ordered to withdraw when the battle took a turn for the worse, but their Colonel refused to retire until orders were received through the proper chain of command, which was KEY in the loss of 36% of their men, as many tried to cross the Potomac River back to Maryland.
Their regimental numbers are the KEY you seek to gain access to the inner sanctum of the cache where you will need to MASTER mind the opening of the cache. Be wary of the bends and scrapes or significance of the MASTER design, as a specific color may by chance be KEY in what you need to complete your task. Be careful as you KEY in on the MASTER thought process and color of the design needed to open what you seek. Remember - This Cache represents Brother against Brother at times during the Civil War which has been transformed to Brother with Brother to blend history and gourmet together. Please make sure to return everything as you found it so that the next person can experience the same level of excitement as they go through the processes to gain admittance to the cache.
CONGRATS FTF: ZORROBARNES - You reached the inner sanctum!
