Upnor is a pretty village to come to for a stroll. There is free parking at both carparks at either end of the village and the village boasts a castle and several places for refreshments. You can enjoy views over the river and go for a meander either along the beach or in the woods, which are a designated SSSI area.
While often referred to as Upnor Church, the pretty church of St. Philip & St. James is almost hidden away. The parish itself is actually on the outskirts of Strood, with the main church of All Saints looking over the Medway River.
The parish church of St. Philip and St. James (1884) was designed by Ewan Christian and it is virtually unaltered today.
In 2020, the church has an electronic organ and PA system, along with toilet facilities and a moveable tea/coffee bar. In front of the church is a small graveyard with a few car parking spaces and to the rear there is a bench overlooking the peaceful larger graveyard.
