Geocache Description:

Escarpment Rail Trail

Once a part of the Hamilton & Lake Erie Railway, The Escarpment Rail Trail provides some great lookouts, and alot of history along the way, this 6 stage multi will bring you along the railway which has now been turned into a trail, and bring you to some of the interesting lookouts and historical locations along the way. the recommended parking and trailheads have been added to the cache page, there should be ample parking up on Mountain Brow Boulevard, and i highly reccomend taking that route to do this multi.

Stage 1:

Uli Stairs

N 43 13.341 W 079 48.963

There are many stairs along the Hamilton escarpment, but there is one set of stairs that stands out, the Uli Stairs. these stairs were hand crafted by a local man, and were finished in 2007. although not the very popular route, many people go out of their way to take the Uli Stairs for the adventure of it.

Go to the coordinates, and look for a nearby fence post with some golf balls nailed into it, how many are there?

take this number and subtract 4, this will be A

Stage 2:

Kimberly Stairs & Lookout

N 43 13.733 W 079 48.901

At the time of writing this (2021) the kimberly stairs are the most recent city built set of escarpment stairs built by the city of hamilton, opening in 2006 this set of stairs provides access between the Escarpment Rail Trail and Kimberly Drive.

look around, there should be a sign nearby, how many arrows are on the sign?

subtract 3, this will be B

Stage 3:

Quarry Building

N 43 13.969 W 079 49.402

Despite trying to find what this building is or what it was used for, i could not find a single bit of info on it... its a really interesting building, located just feet off the trail, the only thing i could assume is that it has something to do with the nearby quarry.

On the side of the buildings you should see a ladder, how many steps are there on it?

subtract 9, this will be C

Stage 4:

Canadian Pressed Shale

N 43 13.979 W 079 49.359

This is the location of an old quarry from many years ago, It went by the name of Canadian Pressed Shale Quarry, but i was not able to find any info on when it opened or closed, but based on the state of the area now, i would say it was many years ago. today there is not much left of the quarry site, other than a valley, some pipes and rock left over.

at the coordinates you should see a hill leading down into the quarry, look along the edge of this hill, you should see a large metal pipe coming out of the ground, if the pipe is square D = 6 If it is round, D = 5

Stage 5:

Hamilton Brick Works

N 43 14.131 W 079 49.663

The brickworks here were opened in 1906 under the name Hamilton Pressed, but later changed to the name Century Brick. this location has mined out of the escarpment here for over 100 years now and made alot of bricks for the city of hamilton. There is a great lookout from the escarpment rail trail here with a great view of the escarpment and the city.

you should see a wooden fence along the edge of the trail here, how many white blazes are on the fence?

add 7, this number will be E

Stage 6:

Kenilworth Access Bridge

N 43 14.060 W 079 49.561

Trains once ran across this bridge on a daily basis, the bridge here was a part of the Hamilton & Lake Erie railway. the railway was constructed in 1873 but we can assume that this bridge was not the original one in this spot.

on one end of the bridge, there is a sign, how many kilometers is it to the Kimberly Stairs? Multiply this by 2

This will be F

The final coordinates are:

N 43 14.ABC

W 079 50.DEF
