Storia:

This is the bonus cache to the Adventure Lab "Ferrara tra storia, leggende e miracoli".
It will take you to a church built for devotion after a miracle explained below.
History:
In the early 16th century, the Duke Alfonso I d'Este feared that his traditional enemies, Venice and the Pope, might jointly attack Ferrara at any moment. He therefore decided to reinforce the walls, in particular the eastern side that his father Ercole I had not managed to modernize. Ercole I had in fact expanded the city to the north, endowing it with modern fortifications with sloping walls and bastions (Erculean Addition). However, he had left the rest of the walls with the antiquated medieval towers with a square base and rectilinear curtains, that were no longer suitable for defense against modern firearms.
In 1510 the workers began the demolition of a part of the old walls and in its place three "arrowhead" bastions would have built.
The miracle:
The craftsmen began the demolition work on November 4th. In the excitement while dismantling the walls and annexed buildings, the workers certainly did not pay too much attention to the conservation of the decorations. It therefore happened that, during the demolition, a fresco with the sacred image of the Madonna fell ruinously to the ground from the top of a watchtower. Incredibly, the painting did not crumble, and the head of the Virgin Mary remained intact despite the fall. The people of Ferrara, including Alfonso I himself, amazed by the incident, judged the event to be miraculous. The duke therefore gave the order to complete the sacred image of the Madonna in "the whole figure of her with her Son standing" and to wall it up on one of the three new bastions.
The construction of the church:
In the following years the fame of the miracle spread inside and outside the city, and with it the devotion of the faithful to the sacred image. In 1526 it was therefore decided to build a temple dedicated to the Virgin not far from the bastion, in which to expose the Madonnina to the cult of devotees. The construction of the church began in 1527 and ended in 1536.
The earthquake that hit Ferrara in November 1570 seriously damaged the church so the court architect Alberto Schiatti took care of the restoration and had a new façade reconstructed.
The earthquake of May 2012 damaged the church again and it is now waiting to be restored.
