'농'이라는 것은 비들채나 싸리등으로 함처럼 만들어 종이를 바를 궤를 포개어 놓도록 된 가구를 말한다. 이 바위가 농을 닮았다 해서 이름이 부쳐졌다고 전해진다. 농바위는 어떻게 이런 모습이 되었을까요?
기반암(바위)에 생긴 갈라진 절리(틈)을 따라 수분이 침투하게 되면 동결융해(凍結融解)현상으로 절리 주변의 모서리 부분은 쉽게 풍화되어 풍화토(새프롤라이트)를 형성한다. 물이 얼면 부피가 9~10% 정도 늘어나며 풍화를 가속시킨다. 동결융해현상은 0°C 근처에서 가장 활발하게 일어난다. 한편 가운데 풍화되지 않고 남아있는 가운데의 암석은 둥근 형태를 가지는데, 이를 풍화토의 중심에 있다고 해서 '핵석(core stone)'이라고 한다. 그 후 시간이 흘러 풍화된 흙(새프롤라이트)이 침식에 의해 제거되고 둥근 형태의 핵석이 기반암 위에 남아 탑 모양으로 쌓여 있는 경우가 있는데 이를 '토르(tor)'라고 한다. 주로 화강암에서 잘 발생하는데, 농바위의 경우 안산암 토르이다.
Nong(chest) is an item of furniture consisting of stacked boxes. Such boxes were tradionally made by weaving willow stumps together. It is said that this rock was named because it resembled a nong. How come this rock formed?
Tors start to form when magma that has intruded into the crust cools to form a batholith. The softer rock above the batholith erodes away over time leaving the batholith exposed to the surface. While the rock is cooling it starts to contract causing cracks - these also occur when the batholith is exposed and pressure is released.
The crack in the rock are made worse by the process of freeze-thaw weathering. Freeze-thaw weathering takes place when water is trapped in the cracks of a rock and freezes. If the air temperature drops below freezing, the water will freeze and expand by 9-10 per cent putting pressure on the rock which then expands and enlarges the cracks. The process of freeze-thaw weathering occurs until the rock is weakened and shattered. It is most effective where the temperature fluctuates around 0°C. Tor forms mainly in granite, but in the case of Nongbawi Rock, it is andesite tor.
