Welcome to Mars! The Red Planet. Or Barsoom, if you prefer.

You are joining 11 orbiting spacecraft and 3 working rovers that are currently on the planet. And, just maybe, some of H.G. Wells Martians with their heat rays or Edgar Rice Burroughs 4 meter tall Martians with their six limbs. Or perhaps Marvin the Martian with his Illudium Q-36 Explosive Space Modulator. Or maybe even My Favorite Martian, Uncle Martin, who studied Earthlings and now lives on Fulton Canal. Or maybe the ever inventive Mark Watney, stranded on Mars and just looking for a way home.

Mars has intrigued people for a long time.

It may be because of the way the orbits of Earth and Mars interact. Most of the time, Mars is an inconspicuous reddish star, with nothing to distinguish it from a thousand others. Then, about once every two years, it’s orbit brings it closer to the Earth, and Mars brightens significantly, becoming a baleful red beacon shining in the night sky. And after a few months, as orbital mechanics increases the distance between the planets, it fades back to obscurity until the next close approach.

Or maybe the reason is hidden in meteorites that have been discovered on the Antarctic ice sheet. These meteorites are fragments of rock that have been blasted off the surface of Mars by meteor impacts on that planet. These rocks travel through the solar system and some of them fall to Earth where they are (relatively) easily discovered, lying on the frozen ice. Tiny structures in some of those meteorites resemble similar, larger structures found on Earth, which represent a primitive form of life.

There is no evidence at this time to confirm that those structures are, indeed, martian life forms but the possibility is intriguing. What if life actually started on Mars and spread to the Earth from there? Is it possible that our fascination with the Red Planet is a result of some primitive part of us yearning to get back home?

The final stage of the Adventure Lab will tell you the coordinates of the bonus cache. That's where you’ll find another recent visitor to Earth from planet Mars.
