Spišský hrad na dlani

V nadmorskej výške 634 m, na vápencovej skale prevyšujúcej okolitý terén o 200 m, vládne Spišskej kotline jedna z najcennejších pamiatok Spiša, národná kultúrna pamiatka Spišský hrad. Je nielen dokladom vývoja architektúry u nás od 12. do 18. storočia, ale svojou rozlohou prevyšujúcou 4 hektáre (presne 41 426 m2) sa považuje za jeden z najväčších hradných komplexov strednej Európy.

Bohaté sú aj jeho dejiny. Skala, na ktorej sa rozprestiera, bola osídlená už v mladšej a neskorej dobe kamennej. Praveké osídlenie však vrcholí na prelome nášho letopočtu, keď sa tu vytvorilo obrovské a mohutné opevnené hradisko ľudu tzv. púchovskej kultúry. Jeho valy objavili archeológovia počas nedávneho archeologického výskumu. Našli tu však aj obydlia roľníckeho ľudu i remeselníkov a rozmerný kultový objekt. Z rozsahu, spôsobu opevnenia i z organizačnej štruktúry možno predpokladať, že už v tej dobe tu bolo administratívne centrum stredného Spiša. Valy, v teréne ešte znateľné, obklopovali celý hrad a prechádzali cez jeho najväčšie nádvorie. Po zániku tohto hradiska vzniklo na susednom kopci, na Dreveníku, ďalšie silné hradisko. Až po ňom sa začína budovať dnešný Spišský hrad.

Z tejto strany si môžeme všimnúť najprv dômyselné opevnenie niekdajšej hlavnej brány. Dnes osamote stojace murované stÍpy bolí pôvodne pospájané brvnami, a tvorili prvú čiaru obrany. Za nimi bola hlboká priekopa, potom vysoký múr vytvárajúci predbránie. Až tak sa dostaneme k veži s gotickou bránou z 15. storočia, pred ktorou bolo prepadlisko. Brána sa dala zatvárať nielen padacím mostom, ale aj silnou mrežou, ktorá sa dala spustiť zhora. Na jej mieste bola brána už v 14. storočí.

At an altitude of 634 metres, on a limestone rock that rises 200 metres above the surrounding terrain, one of the most valuable monuments of Spiš dominates the Spiš Basin, the national cultural monument Spišský Castle. It is not only a testament to the development of architecture in our country from the 12th to the 18th century, but with its area exceeding 4 hectares (41,426 m2 to be exact) it is considered one of the largest castle complexes in Central Europe. 

Its history is also rich. The rock on which it is located was already inhabited in the Early and Late Stone Age. However, the prehistoric settlement culminated at the turn of our era, when a huge and massive fortified hillfort of the people of the so-called Púchov culture was created here. Its ramparts were discovered by archaeologists during recent archaeological research. However, they also found dwellings of peasants and craftsmen and a large cult object. From the scale, the method of fortification and the organizational structure, it can be assumed that the administrative center of central Spiš was already here at that time. The ramparts, still noticeable in the terrain, surrounded the entire castle and passed through its largest courtyard. After the demise of this fort, another strong fort was built on the neighboring hill Dreveník. Only after it did the construction of today's Spišský Castle begin. 

From this side, we can first notice the ingenious fortification of the former main gate. Today, the brick pillars standing alone were originally connected by beams and formed the first line of defense. Behind them was a deep ditch, then a high wall creating a front gate. Only then will we reach the tower with a Gothic gate from the 15th century, in front of which there was a gap. The gate could be closed not only with a drawbridge, but also with a strong lattice that could be lowered from above. A gate had already been in its place in the 14th century.
