UK Mega 2021: Lincolnshire
23 LM21: Saltfleetby
The pronounciation of this village name, like many in Lincolnshire, if often the subject of debate. There are many place names in the area ending in '...by' (Bigby, Barnetby, Sotby, Candlesby etc), most of which were so named by the Viking invaders as they established Danelaw. The ending is thought to refer to the law of the area, so Saltfleetby meant the law of the area around the salty fleet, or river, and we still use it today in the term 'By-laws'.
However, locals tend not to pronounce the ending of Saltfleetby in this way, but rather so as to rhyme with sky or high- 'Saltfleetbye' An alternative pronounciation, no doubt derived from the local dialect pronounciation, sounds more like 'Sallabee' !
