Geocache Description:

This cache is located along the eastern access to Lake Berryessa just 3 miles east of the Monticello dam.

Looking north uphill away from Putah Creek, you will see evidence of a large earth flow of black basaltic lava which broke off from the original lava flow. The lava is known as Lovejoy Basalt that originally flowed 14-15 million years ago from an area about 150 miles to the north near present day Susanville. It was highly fluidic to be able to travel this distance from the source. It is visible to the north higher up the hill. The headwall of the slide is about 400 ft above the road to the north. The slide forms a shallow gully which has eroded over time. Much of this earth flow is obscured by the grass cover. However, there is clear evidence of the flow which came down the hill and into the creek. Your task is identify and describe this evidence.

There is parking at the cache coordinates. You do not need to leave the public parking by the road to log the cache.

Logging the cache. 1. Standing at the coordinates you will see a very large object under a tree. Briefly describe this object and estimate its size. 2. Looking uphill across the road into the slide, there is additional evidence. Briefly describe what you see.

You may post pictures, but be sure not to show the slide or its features.
