Geocache Description:

Why did I bring you here?

To view the past, present and future bridges leading to Cornwall..over one hundred years of bridge history.  Oh ya and to find a cache!

To enter Cornwall from the south by car you must cross a bridge.  This new low level bridge links to Cornwall Island and the USA beyond the next bridge. Thousands of people travel this route each day. This is a unique time for this entrance. This new low level bridge just opened this year but towering over the new bridge is the old high level bridge. This bridge was built to allow for an all Canadian Seaway that would permit the passage of Lakers up the St. Lawrence river. But this never happened as the USA joined in on the development of the Seaway and navigational locks were constructed on the US side allowing ships to travel up and down the Seaway.

When you arrive at the site you will see only one pillar of the original bridge remains.  The other have been cut down to just above the water line.  To better understand the force of the current, during the dismantling process a Tug was trapped against the pillar by the current and the strength of the current turned the tug over and it sunk...no one injured but a new respect for the stength of the river was earned.

The remains of a much older bridge, The Roosevelt Bridge, is just up the river to the west from the new and high level bridges. All that remains are the concrete towers that supported the old bridge.  If you walk up the bike path you will see them.

So when you visit the cache take a few moments to view these structures that define the landscape of Cornwall's southern entrance. Take a few pictures of the high level and share them recording, the process of demolishing this local land mark.

The cache is located just off the bike path and near the new observation deck.
