Il complesso archeologico di piazza Ferrari si estende su un'area di 700 mq, e comprende diverse costruzioni, di cui la più interessante è la cosiddetta Domus del Chirurgo. Si tratta dei resti di un’antica domus romana risalente al II secolo d.C.
Lo scavo ha portato alla luce anche altre strutture di rilievo: resti di una abitazione tardo imperiale, tracce di un insediamento altomedievale con un grande sepolcreto sottostante che evidenziano una notevole stratificazione storica.
Di notevole importanza è il gran numero di reperti e mosaici ritrovati all’interno ben conservati: hanno permesso una fedele ricostruzione della casa e dell’identità del proprietario, oltre a far luce su un passato affascinante.
Il reperto forse più eccezionale è una collezione di ben 150 strumenti chirurgici che non hanno lasciato dubbi circa l’identità del padrone di casa: un medico. Pare che Eutyches (questo il suo nome) provenisse da ambienti ellenici e, come spesso accadeva nell’antichità, si fosse poi formato sui campi di battaglia. In effetti, gli strumenti ritrovati venivano usati soprattutto per traumi ossei e ferite, lasciando immaginare che Eutyches fosse un medico militare. (Fonte www.domusrimini.com).

The archaeological site in piazza Ferrari measures 700 square metres and includes several structures: the most interesting one is the so-called Surgeon’s Domus. It’s an ancient Roman domus (house) dating back to the II century AD.
The excavations brought to light other important structures as well: the ruins of a Late Roman Imperial house and an Early Medieval settlement with a huge burial ground beneath it that provide evidence of exceptional historical stratification.
A great number of mosaics and archaeological finds offer a real picture of Rimini in the ancient times, as well as an accurate reconstruction of the house and of the owner’s identity.
The most important find is a remarkable collection of 150 surgical items, evidence of the profession of the owner, a surgeon. It seems that Eutyches (the surgeon’s name) came from the east, i.e. Greece and, as was often the case, had been trained on battlefields. The surgical items that were found during the excavation works were mostly used in case of bone traumas and injuries. (Source www.domusrimini.com).
