"Houston, we have a problem"
This is exactly what the Houston Astros and their fans thought when Howie Kendrick of the Washington Nationals hit one of the right field foul pole in Game 7 of the 2019 World Series. That blast in the top of the 7th inning off Houston reliever Will Harris was the key to to the Nats taking their first lead of the game and never looking back, eventually winning the game 6-2 and bringing DC their first World Series Championship since 1924!
Howie Kendrick was also the key in Game 5 of the Division Series, hitting a Grand Slam off Dodgers reliever Joe Kelly in the top of the tenth inning, launching the Nats to their first National League Championship Series, where they ended up sweeping the St. Louis Cardinals, which launched them to the the World Series,- the first time a team from DC had made the World Series since the original Senators did it in 1933!
In addition to Howie, so many Nats players contributed immensely to help launch the Nats to DC sports glory. Juan Soto had so many cluctch hits, I lost count. Patrick Corbin, a starter during the regular season, came out of the bullpen in Game 7 of the World Series to get the save. And Steven Strasburg won two games in the World Series which propelled him to World Series MVP. It sure looked like at that time that Nats General Manager Mike Rizzo was right all along to shut Stras down at the end of the 2012 season!
But to me, Howie Kendrick will always be the key to the Nats bringing another championship to DC, just 16 months after the Caps brought the cup here!
