BELL RAILWAY.
Bell was the terminus for the Railway Line which was constructed to run from Dalby (on the main western line) through Sanatorium (named after the Jubilee Sanitiotrium), Mocatta's Corner (Named after a shepherd who had his hut on that part of Jimbour Station) , Kaimkillenbun (from the parish name of Cumkillenbar), Squaretop, Warmga, Koondai-i and on to Bell. The terminus was officially named Bell after Sir Joshua Peter Bell of Jimbour Station.
The railway officially opened on 10 April 1906. During 1906 a mixed train ran from Toowoomba to Bell on a daily basis except Sunday. It was reduced in 1914 to 3 times per week. Then in 1928 a RailMotor was introduced and this ran until 1956.
There were a number of station facilities with the station yard consisting of a turning triangle, or fork line, cattle and sheep yards and goods and cream sheds. 1950 a grain shed was built for the State Wheat Board. Previous to this there was a shed designed to handle and store bags of wheat. During the late 1970's new grain silos were built.
As happens in small towns the train was quickly being outdated by transport vehicles and the roads leading to our closest larger towns of Dalby and Kingaroy were being upgraded. The last official passenger ticket was sold in 1981. In July 1993 the Bell line was identified for closure and the line was placed out of use.
The Railway precinct is now managed and looked after by the Bell Progress & Heritage Assn.
Happy hunting!
