Black Skimmer

The Black Skimmer is a long-winged bird that is mostly black and white.  The Black Skimmer has a very unique feeding style as it flies above the surface of the water with its longer lower mandible skimming the water's surface.  When it feels a fish, it quickly snaps it up.  As the Black Skimmer hunts mainly by touch, it can successfully feed in low light and is often crepuscular (active mainly at dawn and dusk) and even nocturnal.

Optional: In your log let us know if you were you able to identify this bird while searching for caches along this trail.
