In the not-too-distant future, robots will perform surgery on many more patients than human surgeons. Perhaps they will divide the human body into a grid system similar to longitude and latitude on earth. They will find the coordinates of the tumor, zoom into those coordinates, and remove it.
For now, mere mortal surgeons must use actual landmarks inside the patient's body to determine the location of structures inside. Arm surgeons, for example, must find the brachiocephalic artery first, try to avoid damaging it during the procedure, and use this crucial landmark to guide them to the area in question before performing surgery.
This puzzle is a mix of present and future times. Scrub in for surgery and dive in to look for a few vital landmark conduits in the human body – just like a real surgeon! Imagine these landmarks and the GPS coordinates they would stand for in future surgical endeavors. How would you translate a physical entity into a number useful for a robotic "surgeon"? Perhaps one day, you can help design a human grid system for all future surgeons – robotic or otherwise.
Not into medicine? It's okay… This is just a word puzzle after all.
