Ivey Road Park is currently "undeveloped," but open to those on foot. I was struck by how white the sand is from aerial views, how odd to have these old dunes walled off from the surrounding suburbs like a piece of another world. Arrakis, the sand planet in Frank Herbert's "Dune," came to mind. The city website says the dunes will eventually be covered by ball fields, a dog park, trails, skate park and play structures. It will become the "oasis" for the neighborhood, instead of the desert. As I researched this geocache location, I was surprised to hear writer Sam Meredith say, "Our entire society is built on sand," in a March 5th, 2021 report on the growing world sand shortage. The most-consumed raw material after water, its uses range from construction to computers. But coastal sand is being eroded by sea-level rise, and desert sand is too slippery-smooth from wind erosion to be useful in building. So enjoy the view of this sandy spot, dunes stuck twelve miles from the ocean, while it lasts. The cache is a camouflaged water bottle among some green trees overlooking the white expanse. It's maybe a five minute walk from the parking waypoint; climb over or under the yellow car barrier to enter. UPDATE Aug 2022: Park development has started, some new fences have been laid over the dunes. Cache is on the outside of them, still accessible. Artificial flowers added to cache to make it more visible.
