Geocache Description:

ITALIANO: Il pascolo

ENGLISH: The willow

This second stage takes us into the beautiful surroundings at the foot of the Pares. This land is not very suitable for haymaking and is therefore left for pasture, another extremely important activity.

The pasture needs a circular route to make optimal use of the various height bands. This process is known as vertical transhumance. From winter onwards, the cows are housed in the stalls near the farms. Here they can be comfortably looked after by the farmer and can count on a rich supply of hay throughout the summer. With the arrival of summer (with the melting of the snow) the cows are brought on the highlands. The alpine pastures are common property of different farms, on which the herds of different farms live together during the hottest months of the year. In the case of La Valle/Wengen, the cows are brought to Fanes through the Antoniusjoch. Around September the herds are brought back to the valley, but not yet to the barn. They actually graze in the medium-altitude pastures, like those of Rit and Armentara. Only later, towards the end of September, do the cows graze near the hamlets, and are then escorted to the stable every evening and to the pasture every morning. With the first cold they will finally overwinter again in the stable.

During the grazing season, of course, the herds are not left to their own devices. In fact, the FAMËI, the Shepherd, will always follow them. This character is not the owner of the herds, but a worker hired by the various owners who takes care of them (chasing away wolves, milking them, removing them from crevasses, collecting them when there is a storm). For this reason, the ÜTIA, the shepherd's hut, should not be missing next to every decent alpine pasture. Modern shepherds are motorized and move quickly on an e-bike, motorcycle, quad or off-road vehicle and there is no longer a need to live near the herd in the summer. In any case, we can imagine him there on this bench in the sun, the sheperd of the past, who is enjoying a well-deserved rest with his hat on his face.
