The first B-52C model (serial number 53-0399) was completed 23 December 1955, and flew operationally on 14 June 1956. Only 35 were built. The 42nd Bombardment Wing (Heavy) at Loring AFB, Maine (see Feelin’ BUFF 42: Key B-52 Wings: 42d Bombardment Wing (Heavy), Loring AFB, ME) received the first operational C’s. Like the B-model, it was built in reconnaissance and bomber version, but without the separate designations. Unlike the B’s, the C’s came with 3,000-gallon fuel tanks on the wingtips, and natural metal skin color, plus white anti-flash paint under the wings and fuselage to minimize thermal damage during an atomic strike. The post-upgrade J57 engines used on the later B’s was used on the C’s as well. While technology matured, the fire control system was upgraded from the B’s in the form of the MD-9, a far more reliable system. The C’s served SAC well until their retirement in 1971.
