The D-model was the first to be produced at two Boeing facilities: Wichita, KS and Seattle, WA. In 1956, the Wichita plan was spun up to build the BUFF as B-47 Stratojet production had completed. On 2 December 1955, the first D-model was finished (serial number 55-0049), and it flew operationally on 26 June 1956. Seattle’s plant built 101 D-models, while Wichita built the first and 68 more B-52Ds. The D-model as-built was a carbon copy of the C, except for no reconnaissance version. The BUFF was officially, strictly a bomber. The D’s would etch themselves firmly into the history books when the Vietnam War heats up, but that’s best seen in Feelin’ BUFF 30-33. After several hard years of combat in Southeast Asia, the Ds were retired by 1983. To find this cache, navigate to these coordinates: N48° AB.CDE W101° FG.HIJ.
