This two stage multi-cache starts on the side of the road by S.S. #5 Brickley Separate School (now privately owned and on private property so please view from the road only). Brickley School was the first rural separate school in Ontario. The teachers were always Roman Catholic and catechism was taught to Roman Catholic children. Protestant children were also permitted to attend.
S.S. #5 Brickley Separate School's History
1843: The act for the Establishment of Separate Schools was passed.
1855: A log school was opened with 50 pupils in attendance taught by Miss Ann McDonald. The school was built on land donated by John Brickley, thus named “Brickley School”.
1873-74: A new school, the present building, was built.
1968: The school was closed. Kathleen English was the last teacher.
1975: The Peterborough Victoria County Separate School Board turned the school over to the Lower Trent Region Conservation Authority to be maintained as a historical site.
1995: The Conservation Authority requests removal of the heritage aspect of Brickley School and confirms they are willing to sell Brickley School for a nominal fee if the local separate school board doesn’t want to resume responsibility of the old school house.
2006-2007: The school board sold Brickley School privately to the neighbours on the adjoining property.
