The Munsters are a Transylvanian-American family living at 1313 Mockingbird Lane in the fictional city of Mockingbird Heights. The series' running gag is that the decidedly odd-looking family with strange tastes considers itself to be an average American family Herman is the family's sole wage-earner, Herman is employed by Gateman, Goodbury and Graves, a funeral home in Mockingbird Heights.
Fred Gwynne and Al Lewis play well off one another, they’d had a couple years of practice co-starred as Officers Francis Muldoon and Leo Schnauser on the hit sitcom Car 54, Where Are You?
Although the first pilot episode was shot in color, the rest of the series was shot in black and white to save money and resemble the horror movies. Grandpa was Lily’s father, but Al Lewis was a year younger than Yvonne De Carlo. The Munsters own a cuckoo clock that contains a raven. It shouts “Nevermore!”, which is a reference to the Edgar Allen Poe poem "the Raven". The voice of that raven is the legendary Mel Blanc. Special effects technician Kenneth Strickfadden designed Grandpa Munster’s laboratory and Dr. Frankenstein’s laboratory in the 1931 film Frankenstein. Grandpa’s lab includes some of the same props from Dr. Frankenstein's lab.

The Munsters’ hot rod car was made by the famous custom carmaker George Barris. He also made the Batmobile. Barris’s team made the Munster Koach, as he called it, from Model T bodies and a stretched 1927 touring car. The producers ordered another car from Barris for Grandpa. He named it Drag-u-la. It had a 289 cubic inch Ford Mustang engine and the body of a casket. Barris had enormous difficulty getting that casket.
